Guide · Your data

You asked for your data.
The law gave them a month.

Your right to a copy of everything an organisation holds on you is one of the strongest rights in modern law, and it comes with a stopwatch: one month. If yours has been ignored, the clock is now your evidence.

1.The right itself

Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (UK GDPR, retained) · art.15 · Right of access by the data subject
"The data subject shall have the right to obtain from the controller confirmation as to whether or not personal data concerning him or her are being processed, and, where that is the case, access to the personal data and the following information: (a)the purposes of the processing; (b)the categories"…
In plain English: You have the right to ask any organization to tell you what personal information they hold about you and how they are using it. They must provide you with a copy of this data and explain where they got it and who they have shared it with.

2.The one-month deadline

Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (UK GDPR, retained) · art.12A. · Meaning of “applicable time period”
"In Article 12, “the applicable time period” means the period of one month beginning with the relevant time, subject to paragraph 3. (2)“The relevant time” means the latest of the following— (a)when the controller receives the request in question;"…
In plain English: They must respond without undue delay, and at the latest within one month, extendable only for complex requests, and they must tell you about any extension within the first month.
